No player in UNLV football history has drawn more recognition than Randall
Cunningham. Although a
two-time All American as a punter, Cunningham remains the top passer in school
history with more than 8,000 yards passing and 59 touchdown passes in just three
seasons. Cunningham also holds the record in punting with a career
average of 45.6 yards per kick. As a senior, Cunningham led the Rebels to
a school best 11-2 record which culminated with a victory over Toledo in the
1984 California Bowl.
2. Kevin
Thomas CB 1998-2001
Perhaps best known for his big play ability, Kevin Thomas returned 6 turnovers
(4 INT, 2 fumbles) for scores in his UNLV career, including an NCAA record
Click setting 100+ yard fumble return as time expired to beat Baylor in 2000 (Here to view this Link.).
Thomas started in 46 consecutive games for the Rebels and amassed 14
interceptions, second only to Marlon Beaver's 17 picks. He was a three
time MWC first team selection as well as the conference's defensive player of
the year his senior season. His 68 pass breakups easily tops Anthony Blue
and Randy Black's 27 deflections.
3. Adam Seward LB 2001-2004
Nobody tallied more tackles than Las Vegas native Adam Seward. His career
433 tackles far outdistances that of his then- teammate Randy Black, who is
number two on the all time tackles list with 294. This three time All-MWC
selection led the conference in tackles in both 2002 and 2004.
4. Mike Thomas
RB 1973-1974
Despite playing only two seasons for the Rebels, Mike Thomas is UNLV's all
time rushing leader. Thomas' 1,741 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns in 1973
both top the UNLV record book. He was a two-time all-American as selected by the
American Football Coaches Association.
5. Henry Bailey
WR/KR 1991-1994
Henry Bailey was a jack of all trades during his UNLV career. No player
has been responsible for more all purpose yards than Bailey. Known
primarily as a wide receiver, Bailey ranks first in touchdown receptions in a
career and second in all time receiving yards. Bailey also ranks fifth in
UNLV history for both punt and kick return average
6. Jon
Denton QB 1996-1997
Jon Denton is the only quarterback to put up numbers near that of Randall
Cunningham. With another year under his belt, he was sure to shatter all
of Cunningham's career records at QB. In Denton's two seasons, he was one
of the top passers in the nation, throwing for nearly 3,600 yards and 25
touchdowns in his last season, his sophomore year. Denton remains #2 in
passing yards in his career (6,177) and touchdowns (43). His 503 yards
passing against SDSU in 1996 is a school best.
7. Damon Williams
WR 1995-1998
Though he will probably best be remembered for a dropped game tying touchdown
pass in the fourth quarter against the USC, Damon Williams is the most prolific
pass receiver in UNLV history. His 2,558 yards receiving and 187
receptions place him on top of UNLV's all time list.
8. Glenn Carano
QB 1973-1976
Carano threw for over
2,000 yards in each of his last two seasons and totaled 37 touchdown passes in
his career, the last two of which saw him as a starter. Carano is only one
of four Rebel quarterbacks to surpass 5,000 yards at the school. Carano
was selected in the second round by the Dallas Cowboys in 1977, where he backed
up Roger Staubach and Danny White for seven years.
9.
Ickey
Woods RB
1984-1987
Ickey Woods breaks into the top ten UNLV football players of all-time because of
one spectacular season. In 1987, Woods won the NCAA rushing title with
1,658 yards. Woods bruised his way to 10 touchdowns with a 6.4 yards per
carry average. That season was good enough to catapult Woods to being the
highest Rebel ever selected in the NFL draft (#31 to Cincinnati).
10. Nick
Garritano
K 1991-1994
Nick Garritano was known for his booming leg. Garritano booted five field
goals greater than 50 yards in 1994, including one on UNLV's Las Vegas Bowl
victory over Central Michigan, a game in which he tied the UNLV record with four
field goals in one game. His 21 field goals in 1994 is the most in UNLV
history. The all conference player also connected on 54 career field goals
for the Rebels, topping 38 by Jim Cook.
