UNLV hosts Boise State in MWC championship

UNLV's loss to finish the season against San Jose State had little impact on the MWC championship participants and venue. UNLV finished in a tie with both Boise State and San Jose State for the Mountain West regular-season championship at 6-2 and with that, the tiebreaker situation went to the computers.

As the top seed, UNLV will host second seed Boise Boise State at Allegiant Stadium on Saturday, December 2nd at 12:00 p.m. PST to determine the league champion. The game will air on Fox.

With the three-way tie, computer rankings from Anderson & Hester, Colley Matrix, Massey and Wolfe were used to determine the seedings.

The computer rankings identified the two highest-ranked tied teams to participate in the championship game. After they were identified, the head-to-head result was used to determine the host. Since the teams did not play each other in the regular season, the highest-ranked team (UNLV) in the computer rankings will host the championship game.

UNLV could have spared some nerves with a win against San Jose on Saturday, but the Rebels dropped the game 37-31 after falling behind 17-0 in the first quarter. Boise State handled Air Force 27-19 to close their season and force the three way tie at the top.

The Rebels and Broncos did not play this season. With common conference opponents, both teams beat Air Force, Wyoming and New Mexico. Both teams lost to Fresno State. UNLV beat Colorado State, while the Broncos dropped a one point decision at CSU. UNLV finished the season with a loss against San Jose while Boise State handed the Spartans their last loss before they closed the season with six straight wins.

San Jose State, the hottest team in the league and perhaps the best team in the league, gets left out.
