Maybe UNLV had a sour taste in their mouths after losing a winnable game at the Cal Bears last time out. The Rebels, led by Louisville transfer Aidan Robbins and his three touchdowns, pulverized the North Texas defense for 365 yards on the ground while an efficient passing game cracked the 200 yard mark.
Redshirt sophmore quarterback Doug Brumfield completed 21 of 27 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 100 yards on the ground in the dominating 58-27 victory. Robbins added a career best 227 yards and three scores. Robbins now has seven touchdowns in three games, six of them by the ground.
What looked like a back and forth affair that would come down to the fourth quarter was stymied by the Rebel defense. After two earlier stops on fourth and short while the Mean Green was in field goal territory, the Rebel defense stuffed North Texas on a fourth and goal from the one yard line while holding a 44-27 lead in the fourth quarter. That stop effectively ended any North Texas hopes of a late comeback. Cruising with confidence, the Rebels mounted a six play, 99 yard drive to put a stamp on the victory. A Cameron Oliver late pick six topped off the day for the Rebels.
The first half was a back and forth affair as the Rebels headed into the locker room with a tight 23-20 lead. After a North Texas field goal early in the second half to cut the Rebel lead to 30-27, the Rebels rattled off four touchdowns to end the game.
The Rebels (2-1) head to Logan, Utah to take on the Aggies next Saturday. The ailing Aggies have been outscored 90-7 over their past two games against #1 Alabama (55-0) and Weber State (35-7).
