With sheets of rain drenching the game, UNLV held San Jose without a point in the second half to win 27-16. The Rebels failed to take full advantage of good field position and Spartan mistakes in the first half, trailing 16-10, before outscoring the Spartans 17-0 in the second half.
The win gave the Rebels a 6-0 regular season road record, a first in program history. It was the Rebels 8th straight road win dating back to last season. It was also the first time Rebels have beaten the Spartans on the road since 1993.
Both offenses struggled to find any groove until the Rebels started to wear down the Spartan defensive line in the second half. Jai'Den Thomas finished with 135 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. His go-ahead touchdown late in the third quarter put the Rebels in the lead for good.
The Rebel defense was stout, allowing only 112 offensive yards on the night, the second-fewest total ever allowed by UNLV in a game. The Rebels had the Spartans at -2 offensive yards before they had their only productive drive of the night, scoring on a 33 yard touchdown pass to Matthew Coleman to put San Jose up 16-10. It was the only offensive score for the Spartans as they used a 40 yard pick-six from Vegas native Isiah Revis and an errant snap on a punt attempt for a safety.
The Rebels had a major advantage in time of possession with over 40 minutes. The Rebel defense forced seven three-and-outs and the San Jose defense started to wilt in the second half. The Rebels rushed a total of 65 times to whittle down the Spartan defense.
UNLV will close out their regular-season schedule with a Senior Day home game vs. UNR on Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. and tickets are available by visiting UNLVTickets.com. The game will be televised nationally CBS Sports Network.
