The Rebels had plenty of opportunity to pull off the upset over No. 17/19 Boise State (6-1/3-0), but too many mistakes at the wrong time.
With the defensive focal point, UNLV did all they needed to do against Heisman candidate Ashton Jeanty. The Rebels held Jeanty to 128 yards on 33 carries and none of those yards came easy.
In spite of difficulty running the ball, the Broncos were able to play mistake free and move the chains. The Rebels, who boast a +12 turnover advantage, one of the best in the nation, finished the game without a turnover. Further, UNLV wasn’t able to put any pressure on Bronco quarterback Maddux Madsen.
Madsen wasn’t spectacular, but was steady in throwing for over 200 yards with one touchdown and none interceptions. He ran only three times, but was able to scamper for a 48 yard run to set up a Bronco score, their first of the game. He also added a key third and goal conversion for a touchdown on a 7 yard touchdown scramble just before the first half ended to put the Broncos up 13-10.
Rebel quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams the other hand, was under constant pressure, sacked six times. He was forced out of the pocket on several occasions, making positive yardage out of a loss.
A turning point came late in the first half with the Broncos leading 13-10. With 1:43 left in the first half, Williams was picked off by Williams,Hajj-Malik pass intercepted by Andrew Simpson.
Madsen found Cameron Camper at the UNLV two yard line. Faced with a 4th and goal, Boise burned a time out and decided to go for the touchdown. Madsen found Matt Lauter in the end zone with six seconds left in the half to give the Broncos a 20-10 halftime lead.
Coming out of the break, the Rebels mounted their most effective drive of the game. Ending with a 5 yard run on a keeper, the Rebels drove 70 yards on nine plays in under four minutes to trim the lead to 20-17.
After a Boise field goal, the Rebels took their final lead of the game near end of the third quarter when Williams found Jaden Bradley wide up from 34 yards out to put the Rebels up 24-23.
The Boise defensive line dominated the fourth quarter, keeping pressure on Williams. The Broncos needed one score and that got that on a 4th and goal attempt from the one yard line from Jeanty. Though the Rebels held the Broncos to only 3 of 15 third down conversions, Boise was 4 of 4 on fourth down conversions.
Down one, the Rebels were able to get into Bronco territory, but the drive was stalled in part by an unsportsmanlike like penalty on Jalen St John.
The Rebels were forced to punt and Boise was able to churn the running game and eat up the remaining 8:07 on the clock.
