Broncos dominate Rebels in MWC Championship

The UNLV Rebels, playing in their first Mountain West Championship game, dropped a 44-20 decision to the surging Boise State Broncos Saturday at Allegiant Stadium.

Early on, it appeared it was going to be a shootout with the teams exchanging blows. With the Rebels trailing 14-7 in the second quarter, the Rebels made a defensive stand when Fred Thompkins picked off Taylen Green and raced 47 for a game tying score.

That was the pinnacle for the Rebels.

Just three plays later, Green connected with Austin Bolt on a 57 yard flea flicker to take the lead for good.

With the Rebels trying to keep pace, freshman Jayden Maiava fumbled at the Boise State 30 yard line.

It didn't take long for the Broncos to capitalize. On the very next play, Green rumbled 70 yards to give the Broncos a cushion at 28-14.

While the defense had problems getting stops, UNLV had it's worst offensive performance since an early season game at Michigan. '

In total, the Broncos amassed 527 offensive yards while holding the Rebels to under 300.

The Rebels next play UNLV Rebels in the 2023 Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday, December 26. The game kicks off at 8 p.m. CT inside Chase Field – the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks — and will air on ESPN.
