As was the case early in the season for UNLV sophomore Goodluck Okonoboh, who decided upon returning from the Runnin' Rebels' trip to Hawaii that it was time to look elsewhere to further his collegiate career.

After a freshman season in which Okonoboh averaged nearly 27 minutes a game, his minutes have dwindled playing behind Ben Carter and Stephen Zimmerman. Along with the reduced time, Okonoboh's production has also been trimmed.

Okonoboh has averaged just three points and three boards during the Rebels 5-1 start to the season. With the impact of Dwayne Morgan and Derrick Jones thus far, it didn't look like Okonoboh was going to get more than his 15 minutes of action anytime soon.

One of head coach Dave Rice's biggest recruits, Okonoboh has regressed in his second season as his competition has improved. St. John's transfer Chris Obekpa will eligible next year to add to the UNLV depth inside the paint.

There's no question that Okonoboh's departure will be a blow to UNLV, which has planned to play as many as 10 guys a contest, but it will help define roles for the players that are on the roster. That could be a blessing in disguise.

If Dwayne Morgan, who started the previous game against Indiana, continues to evolve into a stout power forward, Okonoboh would be hard pressed to get more than mop-up duty if Rice decides to trim the rotation to eight Rebels.
