Smith the latest to move on
With the influx of new players at the guard position, it was only a matter of time before another scholarship needed to be freed up for the UNLV Runnin' Rebels basketball program.
Two days after Jordan Cornish committed to Dave Rice and UNLV, DeVille Smith is on his way out
Smith's up and down season told the story of how the Rebels ended up doing. When he was hot, UNLV was nearly unbeatable. Whenever, he struggled, so did the entire Rebel offense.
Averaging nearly 10 points a game, Smith was more of a scorer than distributor, which became a problem whenever opposing defenses were able to clamp down on him from penetrating. He finished the season scoring in double-digits in six of the last seven games.
Smith's crowning performance came in a road game at Boise State where he scored a season-high 22 points before hitting what looked like a game-winning three-pointer that ended up getting waved off.
UNLV is bringing in seven newcomers to next year's roster and six of them can compete at the guard position, two being point guards. If he had stayed, it would've left little room for playing time.
After all the offseason moves, the 2014-15 roster finally appears to be firmly set.
